He was in Norway initially, survived a sinking on the way back to the UK and then went to the Middle East in a staff capacity. It’s a cracking book, I put a little review on here a while back.
My latest acquisitions. A bargain both for € 20,00 (SAS-book in hardcover, which normally does € 32,00):
Bugger. I found a bound collection of The Kukri: The Journal of the Brigade of Gurkhas on eBay: Volume 4 1952 Volume 5 1953 Volume 6 1954 They're hard to come by, so £75 incl. postage is pretty reasonable—and as you know, I have a specific interest in Malaya at this stage—but I really shouldn't be spending more at this time of year, so I decided to leave it overnight on the rationale that someone was highly likely to swoop and remove temptation from my gaze. Only they didn't. So with willpower dialed up a notch, I waited another day. And they still didn't. So, in order to assure myself that I had tried to acquire this very useful contemporary source, I put in a £60 offer, expecting the seller to reject it. But they didn't. So now I've bought it. Bugger.
Needed to get out the house and ended up in Waterstones -50% off all hardbacks for next 3 days! Treated myself to this... Was going to wait as it's £40 but 50% off was definite bargin. At the till discovered had £20 on my loyalty card so ended up spending nothing
Mine is still en route but will arrive today, got about 30% off. Hardcover for € 31,00, instead of € 46,00.
I found this under the Xmas tree a few days ago and assume it was meant for me. NEW BOOK - Roy's Boys by Christopher Jary (1st Bn in Sicily in WW2) - The Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum Regards Tom
https://www.panzerregiment1.com/ This just arrived here in Canada and it is very impressive. Great to see some excellent independent works still being published.
I found this an interesting read especially about the recruitment, posting and promotion process and its improvements during the War
Became aware of a private publication of a Dunkirk memoir—by a full general, no less (how did I miss it before?) This one: The story of one Green Howard in the Dunkirk campaign General Sir Harold E Franklyn: Harold Franklyn - Wikipedia Then, the next day, a catalogue from a serially overpricing bookseller (name by private message) came in, featuring this sixty-page book at £65 ('rare'), but two minutes on Google turned up a perfectly decent copy for £15, so I had to really. I had to, I tell you.
I got all excited by one of their Indian regimentals. Thankfully, going through the same process resulted in Amazon telling me I'd already got it It's a pity Ebay doesn't tell you...
