I remember this case of the murdered taxi driver.I thought that the lady was referred to as Elizabeth. The crime was committed while Hulten was on the run as AWOL from US forces and Jones tagged along with him.

He paid the penalty for murder (Shepton Mallet) and Jones was was sentenced to imprisonment.

The account was well covered some time ago by the AFB.

Pentonville prison, where Hulten was hanged, is in London.

Obviously Hulten went down the path of the British justice system and as such was executed at Pentonville.

I think there was legislation entitled something like "visiting foreign forces act" which covered the path of justice when crimes were committed by foreign forces on British soil against British law.It should have been in force then but certainly was when relations with the Soviet Union deteriorated on closure of normal access to Berlin in 1948 (Berlin Airlift) and once more US forces were based in Great Britain.

The New York Times article makes reference to a special dispensation being signed by Roosevelt to allow the execution to take place. In common with most other murders and serious crimes there are a number of files concerning this case at the National Archives and these will almost certainly contain a lot of additional information.

    Re.the post by Drew 5233,
The villain's name was Eddie Chapman, there was a movie made called "Triple Cross" in the late sixties or early seventies starring Christopher Plummer as Chapman and Trevor Howard as his Secret Service handler.I'm not sure how accurate it was but an entertaining film just the same.

Although not related to allied service personnel during the war, My Uncle was part of the Army of Occupation (Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry) in Germany after the war he was also fluent in German, During the trials of the SS guards from the Death Camps he had to attend the hangings of those who where Dealt with by the Americans, The Americans used to read out the crimes to the condemed and would ask for a response before hanging them, My uncle with a French & Russian had to interpret any last words from the SS guards before the drop opened, this was partly for transparency so the all the countries of occupation knew what was being undertaken for legal reasons.

Re post #59 there was a documentary on the BBC about this guy, he was in the Channel Islands when the Germans arrived, and blagged his way to becoming a spy for them, was shipped to the UK and gave himself up to work for the intelligence (making sure his previous crimes were deleted).

Just been reading about the murder of Lord Teichman in Jackson Granholm's book The Day we bombed Switzerland , pages 108-110.
A couple of USAAF privates ( Wojtacha & Smith) were poaching on his land using M1 carbines, when he went out to confront them Pvt Smith fired at him from the hip killing him with a single shot. Smith was hung for his crime.

Smith is buried in Plot E as mentioned earlier.
