During the Second World War, Kreukniet (born in 1894) joined the resistance. On October 8, 1944, he was arrested for printing and distributing illegal literature. He was locked up in the 'Oranjehotel', the detention center in Scheveningen, and then disappeared without a trace. The death book of the Oranjehotel stated that Kreukniet had died of pneumonia and pleurisy on October 28, 1944.

An investigation by the BIDKL has shown that the cause of death stated by the German authorities was incorrect. Kreukniet's body was exhumed in March 1947 from an anonymous group grave of 9 people on the Waalsdorpervlakte. He was unmistakably killed by firing squad.

The remains were transferred to the military identification center in Leusden, but could not be identified at the time. Kreukniet was therefore buried as an 'unknown Dutchman' at the Rusthof general cemetery in Leusden. In 2012, the remains were transferred to a final resting place at the National Field of Honor Loenen. That grave will soon be renamed.

Although the identity of Kees Kreukniet could not yet be established in 1947, there are striking similarities in the excavation report. That's how his dentures are listed. It also states that his shirt is provided with a store brand of a clothing store on the Vlierboomstraat in The Hague, near his home.

    Relatives called up
The Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) successfully conducted the relationship investigation. The WW2 Traces Foundation provided valuable background information about the person Kees Kreukniet. About 30 victims of the Waalsdorpervlakte are still unnamed buried on the Ereveld Loenen and elsewhere. The BIDKL calls on relatives who have not yet come forward to contact them and provide DNA.
