Moreh was a major supply dump established on the border between India and Burma at the end of the road over the Shenam Saddle and just north of Tamu. It was beefed up at the end of 1943 to support 20 Division in the Kabaw Valley and to be ready to support a push into Burma/Myanmar in 1944. The Japanese launched U-Go in March 1944 and Slim and Scoones directed 20th Division to withdraw to the Imphal plain so the supply dump (which was two and a half miles by a mile long) was abandoned; whatever could be shipped out was taken but the rest was destroyed. The 1st Northamptonshire Regiment were part of the defence and vacated it on 1st April 1944, taking four and a half hours to drive to Palel.

I have one description of it in 32 Brigade War Diary for 1944 but otherwise it is really hard to get detail on where in Moreh the dump actually was and the town has expanded into a major border/commercial hub. Does anyone have anything that gives detail on the location, layout etc? A map would be the research equivalent of a gold nugget!

Thanks CL1. Although it gets a mention it doesn't have much detail at all. In fact the whole paper doesn't have much in the way of detail on the supply arrangements and is very much written at the 'strategic' level for the whole campaign.

Thanks Tricky Dicky. I was with Rajeshwor Yumnan (Raj on this site) last week and saw some of the shells mentioned in the Times of India article! I'll ask him if he can pinpoint exactly where they were found.

I have the war diaries for 20 Div and 32 Brigade, plus some of the units defending the Moreh Depot at the end of March 1944 and although there is a fair amount of detail and it mentions the names of the boxes there is nothing that says exactly where it was except for the page I posted above. I will check some other units on my next visit to Kew. The IV Corps Location Statement has a list of the units there in Jan/Feb.
