    Hi people,

I know this topic has been covered a few times because
I have gone through all the post on here, but for a while
I have been toying with the idea of purchasing a deact
Mk1 Bren Gun, just something I have wanted ever since
playing with one in my history class, which was once held
in the army cadets hut at our school and again when I
spent a week at deepcut barracks on a youth training
scheme thing...oh yes and not forgeting my best Airfix
1/32nd Eighth Army soldier laying down with a Bren :D.

Well I have searched and searched for a good source
on the net and emailed a few people including Von on
here and I am sold...I want one, just have to save a
    few of those shinny things.

Well we all know that when searching for things on the net
you tend to get pushed from pillar to post, especially when
you start going to their links page...sometimes they throw
up some good finds, sometimes you get the odd page no longer
available and then...well I am sure I have seen this person on
here before and I think they are taking this World War II thing
a bit far and I think they need some serious help :D.

Right I am going to put a link to the site I found, but please
do not be offened, just put your tounge in your cheak and
have a good laugh...this could be your next door neighbour.

Click on below, scroll down and go to the first link
    on the page

    What a fascinating site.
I did do a quick whois check to make sure this wasn't a very naughty next door neighbour in the UK but he's in the states so I assume he knows what he's doing legally. If he was UK based I imagine he'd have had his front door kicked in a few days after uploading the site.
(Make triple sure you get the proof-house deac certificate when you buy yours Kieron, gotta have that piece of paper declaring it a lump of old iron! )

Looking at those shots of the receiver it's been viciously deactivated with those cuts right across it, presumably the US is pretty severe on deacs as they know there's a greater 'reactivation' skills base out there?
Mine's been done in a rather more subtle manner with discrete cuts, welds, and even what looks like a slight bend in the barrel to make it an 'ex-gun' rather than any sort of firearm, I'm convinced if you tried to make it fire a live round it'd explode and take your face off if there was any ignition.

Now trying to work out if my Brenda has a 'short' flash-cone or a 'long' ?...

Think I might have to buy Dugelby's 'The Bren Gun Saga' one day.
Fondled it once and it looks superb:
Book: The Bren Gun Saga - International Military Antiques
Collector Grade Publications - Bookshelf #6 - Prewar Colt National Match Government Model Pistol, M1 Garand rifle, Sten Machine Carbine
I see there was a large expansion to the 1999 edition; I'll have to watch that...

Kieron, like Adam says make sure you have the right paper work....I bought a AK47 back from Iraq (officially) for the Cpl's Mess and that was a right nightmare sorting out all the paperwork and it wasn't cheap getting deac either.....I had to take it to a place near Worksop, a rather nice big country house on an estate and had visions of getting stopped by the Rozzers on the way there and then on the way to Folkstone with it, to get it boxed and mounted by my father.

Good luck with the search :)

    Near Worksop?
Would that have been Ryton Arms?

They flogged me Brenda at Beltring, and do their own deactivation work. Interesting chatting to the chaps that run it, importing container loads of weapons for legal deactivation. They said the armed guards required for shipments was one of the most expensive and complex parts of the business .

    Adam,

Looking at the picture of the MG42 at the front on the house it looks like the place I pulled up outside expecting a butler to come out and say can you use the servants entrance round the back

My AK came into the UK via a ISO container unloaded at the Military docks down in Portsmouth somewhere. Someone went and collected and bought it up to my old units armoury then I took it to that country house. The Army tend to carry rifles around in their boot on the back of a MOD 90 ID Card sometimes when going on Range Courses and the like. When I went to Iraq we had a 100 rifles in the boot of a coach and in a cabin on the ferry across to Holland before another coach trip to Hanover.

Any way heres my end product :D

Looks nice Andy, is your Dad a cabinet maker? I have
been looking at these guys deacts and he is only in
Birmingham not that far from me, what do you think
Von? He is also going to a show that is being held at
Malvern in April...plenty of time to save up those shiny
    things :D

Andy, could you provide more close photo(s) of your AK, I am pretty curious is this a AK47 or AKM series. ;)

:D I love that film, why I didn't spot that god
knows, so what did you think of the Brens from
    that supplier Von?

I'm no expert Kieron, I just wanted a Bren gun.
They look OK to me - Get yourself down to the show, there'll likely be other dealers present so you can have a proper look.
There are a fair few cutaway Instructional Brens out there too, a lot more pricey but very pleasing.

I have an ex Bundeswehr friend who visited the Weapons Fair last year at the Berlin International Exhibition Centre.

He told me that there were lots of deactivated weapons on sale as well as swords and bayonets etc, going for reasonalble money.
Just what is reasonable I known not!

It will be some time in Spring I think and will probably take a peek with Marcus.

If I get there I will take photos and share them on the forum.

I am pretty certain he told me that ther were Brens and Sten guns on offer plus lots of mint decommissioned K98's.

    Keep you posted.

    Regards
    Tom

I was watching the news today and there was a special report
on the British withdrawal from Basra, they were following the
Iraq Army on house to house searches, well they displayed
the guns they had found and what should be sitting there
amongst the different variants of AK47's, but a Sten gun!

    A bouncing baby Bren.
    Congratulations Kieron.

How many times cocking and 'firing' it before you were told to shut up?... if you can cock it with one hand...

(And by the way DON'T unscrew the interesting looking plastic knob in the buttplate that retains the spring - it leads to mockery from one's 'friends' as parts fly out backwards over the shoulder.)

It looks like you have got your hands on a very well kept Bren! Congratulations.
