Took a look at SDGW and given the Hackney connection it's possible it may be one of these two men. Oddly enough one of them seems to have 2 entries, same date different year! Thank you Jonathan. I did check CWGC but without next of kin or location I would be guessing. There are a couple with a wife first name Jane but they are in Lancashire ,she could perhaps have moved down to London in the intervening years. regards Clive
Hi Clive, Hardly up to the Genealogical Proof Standard in the time available but your man would appear to be the Brummie - the two cremated sons recorded on the footstone contributing to this quick & dirty timeline: 1885 Q4 - birth index v6d p203 - MITCHINSON, John - Birmingham, Warks 1889 Q2 - birth index v1c p128 - GREGORY, Jane - Shoreditch, London or 1889 Q4 - birth index v1c p128 - GREGORY, Jane - Shoreditch, London 1910 Q3 - birth index v1b p174 - GREGORY, John - Islington, London 1911-04-02 - censusGREGORY - 13 Teale St, Hackney, E2Name, Relation to Head, Age, Gender, Marital Status, Occupation, Birth Place Frank Alfred Gregory, Head, 27, Male, Married (7yrs), French Polisher, Haggerston Maryan Gregory, Wife, 30, Female, Married, ,Tottenham Frank Alfred Gregory, Son, 3, Male, Single, , Hackney Road Ellen Gregory, Daughter, 6, Female, Single, , City Road Alice Gregory, Daughter, 14 months, Female, Single, , Hackeyn Road (sic) Jane Gregory, Sister, 21, Female, Single, Servant, Haggerstone (sic) John Gregory, Nephew, 8 months, Male, Single, , Highgate [*]MITCHINSON - 14 Clarence St, Islington, N Name, Relation to Head, Age, Gender, Marital Status, Occupation, Birth Place Marmaduke Mitchinson, Head, 52, Male, Widowed, Jeweller Work, Ingham Birmingham John Mitchinson, Son, 25, Male, Single, Carpenter (LCC), Ingham Birmingham Arthur Mitchinson, Son, 21, Male, Single, Carpenter (LCC), Ingham Birmingham Gordon Stanley Mitchinson, Son, 18, Male, Single, Labourer, Ingham Birmingham [*]1911 Q3 - marriage index v1b p744 - GREGORY, Jane - Islington, London = 1911 Q3 - marriage index v1b p744 - MITCHINSON, John - Islington, London [*]1914 Q1 - birth index v1b p1144 - MITCHINSON, Alfred W - Holborn, London [*]1917-12-30 - death record - MITCHINSON, J (CWGC) [*]1945 Q1 - death index v1b p414 - MITCHINSON, Jane - Hackney, London (age 55) Whether Jane's elder son was John's or not we may never know but his trade as a council chippy could explain their meeting if he got sent to work on the place she lived/worked. The WW1 casualty is the following. Jane was my Great Grandmother and John my Great grandfather. Name: John Mitchinson Birth Place: Birmingham Death Date: 30 Dec 1917 Death Location: France & Flanders Enlistment Location: Whitehall, Middlesex Rank: Private Regiment: Prince Albert's (Somerset Light Infantry) Battalion: 1st Battalion Number: 27591 Type of Casualty: Killed in action Theatre of War: Western European Theatre Comments: Formerly 6529, London Regiment
Ian thank you for the update Every cemetery I visit I also look out for civilians casualties of WW1 or WW2 and the forum helps investigate with more info Private John Mitchinson (unknown-1917) - Find A... regards Clive
Thanks for sharing that Clive. I was amazed to find a mention of my family history during ww1 and ww2 linked online as in this post. Interestingly enough, (Kitty my Grand mother) who is buried at the same plot as Jane Mitchinson (Kitty’s mother in-law) was also effected during the same bombing raids in Islington but survived and at the time was pregnant with my Dad John. Kitty was badly burned and so too was her young daughter named Kit (my Aunt). Thanks again for sharing. My Son is also named John, and we will be visiting Windmill Cemetery in January 2022 to visit our hero great grandfathers final resting place. All the best to you Clive. Regards, Ian.
This is great! Jane was also my great grandmother and John my great grandfather. I’m his son Arthur’s grand daughter and his son George’s daughter. My dad would often talk about Kitty being badly burnt. I spent years trying to find out where John was buried and managed to find out before my dad George passed away. He told me how someone from the family took some dirt from Jane’s resting place and left it with John and vice versa.
Hi Alfie. Amazing. We should make contact. Kitties brother (John Mitchinson) my Dad is with me now. We would like to connect with you. My email is [removed by admin]. I’m also attaching here John Mitchinson’s (our great grandfather) memorial medal given to all those who died in the Great War.
Removed Ian's email and the restriction on PMs for new members, so people can contact him via the site. (Also gave PM access to Alfie) (On removing the @ symbol: not sure that really works any more. Not the place to discuss, though, and spammers harvest bulk emails by different means really. Still, I don't post my email publicly any more.) Apologies for the interruption. ~A
Hi Ian, I have emailed you. Got your email address before it was removed. Let me know if you haven’t received it. Thanks Sally
