Some time ago I came across a day to day diary of the invasion of Denmark and Norway that included April 9 when two Danish Heinkel He 8 floatplanes flew to Helensburgh. For the life of me I cannot now find the web site. I am currently researching, for Helensburgh Heritage Trust, wartime aircraft at Helensburgh, particularly Danish, Norwegian and German. Can any members help me trace this diary, or supply information on those He8s that flew to Helensburgh?

Sure they were Danish? The Danish Navy had 22 Heinkel HE-8 on 9th April 1940. None of them saw action as far as I know. After 9th April 1940 the Germans forbid any Danish planes to fly so they were put in stores. Here they were sabotaged in 1943.
On 9th April 1940 the Danish Navy had 2 planes in Frederikshavn as the closest to Helensburgh. But we all the German planes in the air (the air bridge to Norway from Aalborg) I do not believe they would survive the trip across Jutland.
If Danish Navy planes really reached Helensburgh there must be a newspaper mention somewhere.

Thanks TijgerB. The pilot was Paul Zigler and it was in a Heinkel He8 and I think the starting point could have been Frederikshavn. .Zigler's career does list he conducted various assignments in 1940. The flight would have been mammoth but I believe possible. Heinkel He 8s chartered Iceland, Faroes and Greenland before the war. Norwegian Heinkel 115s plus an Arado 196 made Helensburgh, albeit in more modern aircraft but evaded the enemy. The He 8 at RAF Helensburgh would not have been recorded, it still belonged to the Danish Air Force and it was at a secret flying boat base. The story of the Norwegian aircraft at Helensburgh only became known post war. The link I am after was The Silent Guns, Denmark April 9, 1940 which gave day to day events in Denmark and Norway. Appreciate your feedback. I will keep searching

You can check out this homepage Danish WW2 Pilots | Proby. Tempy Lt. Poul Zigler (1910-1989) the man who run it is probably the man with most knowledge about Danes in air forces during ww2:D He started in the navy but when the Army Air Force and Navy Air Arm was amalgamated he was transferred to the Air Force were he later became a General:D

Have double, trebled checked etc. Now think He8 escaping Denmark was chasing a Red Herring!
