Marijke's is just one of a number of stories of truly brave Dutch people who were prepared to risk so much, their stories deserve to be told. Another very brave nurse at the Hospital at the time was Antonie De Lange. She also helped many soldiers to escape - sadly she was killed in an Allied air raid when she returned to her home in Velp.

I am talking about the 17th and i only posted it to rule out the possibility that the 2 incidents were mixed up long after the battle if you understand what i mean.

John, I am for ever grateful to members of this sight . I only set off researching dads war years but the posts and topics of ordinary people and their amazing bravery during the war have fired me to want to learn as much as I can and I feel that while ever their names are mentioned time and again their suffering and their bravery will never be forgotten Elsie

As far as I'm aware the British medical teams occupied St Elisabeth's hospital without opposition on the 17th. It was not until after 0800hrs on the 18th that then Germans occupied the hospital and the British working there immediately became POWs.

I'd agree with John...16PFA were tasked with moving to the SEH to set up a facility on the 17th just as 181 were meant to go to the Municipal Hospital...although they never managed to get there..the majority of 16 were marched away on the 18th with just the two FST's left behnid and a few NO's.....later other waifs and strays managed to get there to work such as Brian Devlin.....

A small booklet with a run of 500 (but all now sold) came out about 10 years ago on the murder of Basher Brownscombe at the Municipal Hospital called For No Apparent Reason.....might be of interest if you can find a copy.....

I think Paul Pariso listed a copy on Photobucket recently
    Was he selling or bragging?
