That makes sense, do you know where they would have been coming from to establish the route?, HQ / Kopenhof farm, the RASC RV maybe point? if the date and time 24th and 13:20 are correct (I still need to double check the shadow analysis), and I'm also interpreting this correctly (Appendix K) Headquarters, Royal Army Service Corps, it wouldn't have given much time from arriving to getting back to the centre of the village as there would only have been a ~20min window?

Regarding the additional picture, the map being pointed at looks to be showing area around Wesel, possibly pointing at Blumenkamp? not sure if this has any relevance to anything but thought it interesting.

In addition, to be honest I'm still pretty new to researching and really appreciate the welcoming community : ), and wealth of knowledge!

Edit: - Checked some stuff this morning, via road the map showing the 5th Para location is 3 miles from the Hamilcar the RAF show on the east of the railway embankment just south of the group we were last looking at. Straight line distance is 2.6 miles. The route would also require them to head west on MehrhoogerStr.

    Best Regards

Not entirely sure about their route, but if 277 landed East of Hamminkeln then the carrier had to get back through it to go to Div HQ and anywhere else for that matter. With regards to the supply drop, that happened at 13:00, and the designated area for the drop (for the 6th Airborne) was over on DZ B, which is the direction these chaps are going. My best guess is they are headed to the main concentration of the drop to then being some back to the Village for the 12 Devons there.

US markings, so possibly Dakotas. If so it wouldn't have been taken at Woodbridge? Peter Cattle at a March 22nd photo op?

Your PDF, and the work with Christie, got me thinking about the possibility of other photographs of the same location, with this I came back to the question of missing D Day footage and questions surrounding CN40.

Christie does appear to have taken two photos of the glider from another angle (which you may well be already aware of): D-DAY - BRITISH FORCES DURING THE INVASION OF NORMANDY 6 JUNE 1944

The description states "men of the Royal Engineers with their equipment moving up a road near Caen" which alone is interesting considering the war diary entry in the PDF.

This gives us a bit better view of the back of the Glider, and of the first digit of the Chalk Number which could well be the 4 of CN 40.

    Hi,

Seen that one before and it's not the greatest quality, but until something else comes along to prove otherwise I'll stick with it being CN 40, Op Tonga. Also there is this thread if interested in other Normandy glider locations.

    Glider Fly-in to Hamminkeln

This work of art is very well done and worthy of inclusion in one of our wide ranging Airborne threads. The artist's name is hard to make out unfortunately ... ?

    Hi,

Capt. Prentice may have been the Doctor that came upon Stanley Maxted and Peter Cattle near their crash site, treated their wounds and directed them to the collection post at a German farm. From a posting by brithm:

Later - Actually going by the info in the 195th ALFA OO it may have been Capt. R.G. Shaw who helped Maxted and Cattle. He was assigned to the RUR, whereas Capt. Prentice was with the Ox and Bucks.

    Regards ...
