I’m writing the biography of a New Zealand nurse named Dorothy Morris. During 1941-43, she was welfare and personnel supervisor for two manufacturing plants - one of 800 and the other of 600 employees - owned by of the Mills Equipment Co. I’d like to find out anything about this company and its activities. Your advice much appreciated.

Hi Mark - MECo was probably the largest manufacturer of webbing equipment in the UK in the early years of the war. Other UK companies then started manufacturing webbing to supplement the output of MECo - and production in places like India, Canada & elsewhere would have provided all of the required equipment as Commonwealth forces grew exponentially in size as the war progressed.

I think MECo had a big part of assisting with the design of the Pattern 1937 webbing as worn by Commonwealth forces throughout the war.

Finding webbing pieces now with legible MECo stamps is getting more difficult.

Nurse Morris held an important position within a company producing vital equipment for the fighting men of Great Britain.
