Hi ladies and gents I have a couple of queries I'm hoping you can help me with. The first is ww2 related, the second rather earlier. I have recently tried out a military genealogy site which specialises in military records without much success. I also tried a search on Ancestry with the same outcome. My first query relates to Douglas John Salter born 1921 who served, I believe, in the RAF. I have tried and failed to find a record for him. Any help here much appreciated. When he was alive he did speak about his service, but with much reticence on the detail. The second part of this is rather earlier, John (possibly Thomas) Salter born 1833 ish. He is the great grandfather of the man above. I am sure that he served in New Zealand in around 1866 and may have been a sargeant. I would like to know a bit more about him if possible. ie. where else he served, when he joined etc. Any helps or tips on how to search some of the genealogy sites would be very welcome. Moderators; If this considered to be in the wrong area, then please move. Many thanks.
Hi, if Douglas Salter served RAF in WW2 his service records will still be with MOD and available on payment of a fee of £30. they willsearch on a full name + DOB and willl need proof of death. I think Pre 1913 army records are available on Find My Past so you may find the elder Salter on that site. Good Luck. Steve Y
Would he have the full name Douglas Henry John Salter, born in South Stoneham district, Hampshire? If so then his service/number was 1486733 which was issued as part of the group starting April 1941 at RAF Pagate to a Militia Man. If this is the same man then the dob would suggest a volunteer rather than conscription. Service number comes from the free to download file AIR 78/139 from The National Archives. Regards Ross
Thankyou for that. He is indeed the man I'm looking for. I'll use his service number to see if I can find some more detail.
