Capt GRAND-GUILLOT, though not an escaper himself, has been almost continuously for eight months behind the enemy lines rescuing escapers and stragglers in the Western Desert.

On many occasions he operated entirely alone, without W/T communications with the outer world, and it was only through sheer determination and tenacity that he overcame all obstacles to carry out his task.

The fact that he operated in an area 20 miles from BENGHAZI during June, July & August 1942 when British troops were at EL ALAMEIN, and Allied prestige amongst the Arabs was at its lowest, is striking proof of his great courage and keenness in pursuing his rescue work in the face of danger and extreme hardship.

Stimulating Arab confidence at this time was certainly an uphill task, but thanks largely to Capt. GRAND-GUILLOT’s untiring efforts they were won over and the Arabs in the JEBEL of CYRENAICA were of very great assistance to many escapers in the Western Desert.

Undeterred by all he has so far experienced, Capt. GRAND-GUILLOT has again volunteered to return and as a rescue scheme for the area behind the AGHEILA line did not materialise owing to the British advance, he is leaving for a special rescue operation in TUNISIA, 150 miles behind the enemy lines.
