Another query. Have come across the term No 1 I.B.D. in war diary, ref soldiers joining a battalion. It refers to "These 1st reinforcements had been evacuated from Cherbourg to Weymouth 1/6/40" Would I be correct that it stands for, Infantry Baseline Defence? Many Regards James

Hi, It’s Infantry Base Depot where reinforcements were held until required. There were numerous such units in France in WW1 and BEF adopted similar process 1939/40. Steve
