Having had a look at Muir's account in our Archives, I see he mentions the town of Avio where he was looked after by someone called Emilio. He also mentions a Lino and an Aurelio.
There are files for an Emiio Tapparelli, Lino and Aurelio Cristoforetti in the Archives in NARA (US National Archives in Washington) and I bet these are the Italians he met. I've only seen the entries on the Card Index and any further search would mean writing to NARA requesting copies.
