Last time I posted here about an experimental mine laying device the identification was solved in four minutes. See
Remote controlled land based mine laying device

Once again Metrovik, this time on 1 May 1942, turn up at the same army camp about 20 miles from Trafford Park and the war diary of 7 Kings Own Royal regiment says

"Experiment carried out by Metro-Vickers in grounds with vehicle for rolling out CORDTEX even (sic) [should it be "over?] A.Tk.mined area."

To me, it seems like the team developing the Beetle were looking for other applications of the same basic vehicle technology to create some sort of mobile mine clearing line charge. I see from one reference that Britain had line projection charges in use at Calais in 1944.

Could the Metrovik experiment be its genesis?
