I am writing the story of the merchant ships at D-Day. I have the personal stories of four members of the salvage ship crews and two from tug crews. I have only one, very interesting, story from a crew member on a Dutch schuyt running into Isigny for the American forces (one of about twenty they chartered). But I have no diaries of crews from the cargo ships or tankers, or for that matter the 490 or so other coasters that were employed. I would be most grateful for any contributions on these subjects and more from tug crews. All contributions will be acknowledged. Roy
Roy - Do you have anything coming out of Falmouth Harbour...would be most interested to hear if you have... Roddy
my grandfather was on a water tanker on D-Day +3 or 4. i think it was a 'Chant' tanker or something similiar. i know his service records state he was in specialist training before. This is the photo my dad gave me as he has been trying to research his service. as he was captured at Narvik, interned, escaped and back to the UK, then back out and sank again, he had quite a busy war! If this is of any help, i can try and dig out some more stuff
Roddy, Haven't got to the bit about where the ships sailed from, but I will let you know when I do. Ports west of Southampton were for American troops. I'm sure you know that Falmouth also had a busy time in June 1940, 97 refugee ships in the port at one time? List attached, I also have a painting but the file is too big to upload. Roy
Roy, i'll go see my dad this weekend and type up anything he has and get a few pics. i'll PM you sunday night/monday morning with everything i find
