William James Rositer was my Grandfather. Sadly he died in 1929. I obtained his MIC from the National Archives and have noticed an anotation -"Retd-", with a date which I can't quite make out. The medals were issued on the 13 Dec 1921

I was wondering if this meant that the medals were returned. The address on the card is correct.

William was a cook and sailed regularly from Fleetwood to Belfast. In 1915 he served on the Duke of Connaught and from memory the Duke of Albany.

    Any help will be appreciated

    Hi Diane,
The ribbons would have been issued to the MMO (Mercantile Marine Office) in Fleetwood and given to the seaman. The medals would have to be minted and sent out later to the seaman's address but sometimes the medals were returned for various reasons. Undeliverable because the family moved on, incorrect inscription on the rim of the medal, and in other cases death of the seaman.

    * I take it you have seen his MN CR10 card?

    Regards
    Hugh

    HI

I am not as experienced with these medal cards as with the army ones, but it seems to me that on the second page, the medals were applied for on 30th January 1920, the application was sent to Fleetwood on that day with the ribbons and was returned on 6/1/21. The medals were then sent on 31.12.21, so he would have them?

    regards

    Robert

Thanks, that makes sense. The question now is what happened to them. I will have to ask family if the know anything.

    Regards
