Hi, I am seeking help for a cousin. Her Granddad was Frederick Beeston Cook born in Cardiff 9/3/1890.
He served in both World Wars and after WW1 he was awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal.
My cousin is trying to find out more about his service.
I am not brilliant at searching Kew records. The only one I found was F B Cooke R583795 28/7/35 Saltburn by the Sea which I don't think is him.
Frederick was born in Cardiff and later moved to Fleetwood Lancs.
I will be grateful for any help/suggestions

Yes I have seen the tree. Our Grandfather's were brothers, surname Peake and I know quite a bit about the family history.

I have given the details to his Granddaughter to-day and told her it will cost GBP3.50 I live in South Africa and his Grandaughter lives in the UK so it will be easier for her to order and pay for it. We will have to wait and see.

Thanks. I realise I misunderstood her. I didn't realise that what she was talking about was the medal card. Silly me! (We communicate via messenger on facebook.) I'll ask her to send me a copy.

    Hi Diane,
The medal card will give up little in the way of useful information for you. If you can bear with me until tomorrow when I am back home I will give you the information you need to proceed.
The seaman you have quoted in your #1 is not the correct man.
    Regards
    Hugh

    Hi Diane,
No online records for him apart from the WW1 medal file. His WW2 Merchant Navy record should be held at Kew in piece BT 382/369
This file is best viewed by visit to Kew or via a researcher. One other thing I should mention is that in 1939 he is shown as being a trawler engineer so there is a chance he could have joined the trawler section in which case his records will be with the Ministry of Defence - Royal Navy or Royal Naval Reserve.
    Hope that helps.
    Regards
    Hugh

Thank you Hugh, I will pass this on to his Granddaughter. All she knows is that he served on coasters. Her maternal grandfather served with the Royal Navy .His service record took nearly a year to arrive. I have offered help if she is needs it..
    Cheers
