George William Hill – Seedies say George Hill - Commendation – when Chief Engineer

    Other awards for this ship:-

    30 December 1941 Gazette Issue 35399, Supplement 20, published 01 January 1942
George Hill - MBE (CD) – 1942 New Year’s Honours – when Chief Engineer

    Note:-
In the above it can be seen that George Hill (or George William Hill) was awarded two different decorations for the same event. As with Captain Stephen Leonard Hoare the Medals Board issued the same decoration twice and it would appear that instead of publicising this mistake (I can find nothing in LG) and changing the decoration (MBE) to a higher one (OBE) for Hill they issued a Commendation. At a time when the Merchant Navy were losing men and ships at an alarming rate, which must have caused a loss of morale, these acts by the Medals Board was arrogant beyond the pale.
They did it for Captain Selwyn Capon - an OBE(MD) in WW1 then a CBE (CD) in WW2, so why not in the above????
It can be seen they (The Medal Board) noticed it with Captain Robert Smith Riley and that is why he only received a Commendation for the sinking of BOVEY TRACEY having already received an OBE(CD)!!!
    Cheers
