Quite a recent memorial, added to the landscape and only unveiled in May 2009

158 flew out of RAF Lisset, just outside of Bridlington in East Yorkshire

the names of all lost sqn members are engraved on the memorial

Thanks for posting the photos, it has to be one of the most haunting memorials I have seen to a bomber Command Sqn.

there website says that the memorial is of six named aircrew who died in an incident in Jul 1942 - but there are seven figures!

I read it that one of the twelve turbines is to commemorate six ground crew who were killed on the 2nd July 1943 in an accident at the bomb dump, the other eleven being named after aircraft from the Sqn. The actual memorial is to commemorate the aircrew hence seven figures.

Just as a matter of interest would there be any Female station members listed on the memorial?

I was photographing a local war memorial and a lady gave me her card. She told me that her husband made a memorial for an RAF squadron. It was the 158 Squadron memorial. I looked at his work and subsequently e-mailed him.

I'll send him one now and ask him about the 7th man and whether there are any females on the memorial,

    Cheers - Rob

    Hi Tony

I got this information from the sculptor of the memorial, Mr Peter Naylor.

There is one female named on the memorial:-

    Name: MORSE, OLIVE MARY
    Rank: Sergeant
    Regiment/Service: Women's Auxiliary Air Force
    Age: 25
    Date of Death: 14/09/1943
    Service No: 2040538
Additional information: Daughter of Percival Ramey Morse and Olive S. Morse.
    Grave/Memorial Reference: North-West part.
    Cemetery: WITHAM (ALL SAINTS) CHURCHYARD

She was going as a passenger from Lissett to (?) Leconfield or somewhere local and the plane crashed on take off. He believes there were 9 on it and all were killed.

Found 7 names from 158 Squadron plus the WAAF, but can't identify the other one. Maybe one of the RAF experts can confirm the missing name.

    The ones I got are.

    J Hunter
    D A Lawson
    A T Nicholas
    A N Perrin
    J G Taylor
    A Thompson
    I R Trower-Foyan

Again from the sculptor Mr Naylor and I quote:-

    "
AC Daniel Owen was the 7th man in the 1000lb bomb explosion. The other 6 were killed outright. He was stood only six yards away when it exploded and had his hat and tunic blown off him but escaped without injury. One lucky guy! If you ever visit the site, you can walk up to the turbines (although access is a little tricky - you have to climb a field gate and walk quite a way as they are dotted around the old airfield) and you will see eleven named after 158 Sqn aircraft and one turbine with the story of the bomb explosion on it and the names of those who died. The attached photo shows the laying of a wreath on that turbine shortly after they were all named. You can see it has the 6 names on it and then in smaller script the story of the 7th man."

Mr Naylor has kindly supplied a photo of the turbine with the names on it.

Finally from Mr Naylor re the above:-

"I'm glad to see someone clarified the confusion that the seven men on 'my' memorial represent a bomber crew - hence the seven, and it is not to do with the 6 men killed in the bomb explosion, although their six names are part of the 851 that appear on the memorial."

My thanks to Mr Naylor for answering my e-mail on the questions raised. Hope that helps.

    Regards - Robert

Memorial - now an Award winning Memorial

    A STRIKING memorial to a
local Second World War bomber squadron has earnt its creator a prestigious national award.

Beverley artist Peter Naylor designed the popular tribute to the 158 Squadron at the former Lissett airfield – and his efforts have now been rewarded with the Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture, which he will receive in London next month.
The memorial, unveiled last year in a ceremony led by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, depicts seven airmen heading off on a mission in honour of the 158 Squadron members killed during the war.
Peter, 59, is delighted with the achievement and said: “This was my first piece of work of this kind so to win this award is absolutely amazing.
“It’s been almost a life-changing event because I never realised how much it would touch people’s hearts, it’s very gratifying.”
The memorial was provided by Novera Energy, who recently redeveloped the former Lissett airfield into a windfarm.
The site, along with the memorial, has attracted thousands of visitors who have so far filled eight visitor books – each holding 750 entries

    Hi Peter,

Sgt Nicholas is listed as RAAF however he is RAFVR. I was trying to find him by surname and date on my spreadsheet to no avail.

    Could you please confirm?

    Cheers
