Hello All, I have attached the medal entitlement for someone I am currently looking into. I'm afraid my medal knowledge is very poor and would like some help if possible - in box 10 for The War Medal on the bottom right there is a tick for an Oak Leaf - does this mean that the recipient had earned a Mention in Despatches? If so would this be the normal medal for the MiD to be mounted on? For some reason I assumed that it would be worn on the relevant campaign star? On a more general note is it possible to research MiDs or were citations not kept? Any explanations gratefully received - sorry for shameful my lack of knowledge! All the best, Skip
Yes to all of the above but only a few MiD citations survive compared to those awarded. Whats his name?
Cheers Drew - very interested if he had an MiD as his family do not appear to know yet. His name is Gunner Nelson David Richardson 6344507 of the RWK, RA and RSR. KIA Albania during Operation Healing II on 29/07/44.
Sorry no one listed under that name. Some war diaries do have recommendations in appendices but they are quite rare and its not an avenue I'd go down. I'd suggest service records to ID the date he earned it and then look at the diary for that period. He may get a mention but if not you'll atleast have an idea of what was happening around that period. I may have one more addition.....Bare with me Cheers Andy
Sorry - I have two RSR diaries but the don't start until Aug 1944 and finish at Jul 45. If you can get to Kew this is the one you want to check. The ones I have are quite detailed and have a typed report on the Op after Healing II so you never know. WO 218/111 Raiding Support Regt. 1944 Jan.- July Cheers Andy
Andy - thanks very much for that. I only have the first couple of pages from that file so will get down to Kew with my camera. Much appreciated.

Skip, You also need to remember that an award of an MID may well have meant that he was recommended for a hgher award (DCM,MM,BEM), but having been KIA (either after the recommendation or during the act) he was then not eligable to receive that higher award & thus the MID was used as a substitute. The date of the MID will be definative. there should be a presentation card for the MID somewhere. The emblem of the MID is NOT worn on any star, it is only worn on the ribbon of the 1939-45 war medal Regards Simon
Robert & Simon - cheers for your help and very valid points. Much appreciated. I will get back in touch with his next of kin and see if they have any further information. If they do not have the full service record then I will apply for it under an FOI. All the best, Skip
