Hello , Does anyone know of a maker of medal frames/cabinets please. I can't seem to find a reasonably priced one . I would like to frame approx 6 medals . Regards Alan
Hi Alan, It may be worth your while checking to see if a picture shop can make up a frame for you-this option maybe cheaper than a medal specialist I had two FA Cup final signed shirts mounted and framed near where I live in a frame shop for a reasonable price a few years ago. How much are we talking as not being reasonably priced? Cheers Andy
Thanks for reply . There used to be a firm on e bay that made them for about £20-£35 but I can't seem to find them now. Some of the specialised companies charge the earth, very nice but out of the question . Regards Alan
Thats a good price but I guess at the end of the day it would boil down to the quality of workmanship. Have you tried a google search?
Alan If you wish to keep the expenses down you might consider using a photo frame such as the one shown below. I set this one up to honour my wife's father who served in WW1. The medals are replicas as the originals were stolen many years ago Regards Ron ps (added on 11/04/09) I should have mentioned that the cardboard mount, already with its recesses, came with the frame and made the whole operation very simple.
Thanks for replies , a photo type frame might be the way forward as I would like to put photo , stripes , badges and medals in . Regards Alan
I just bought a "Friendly Memories" display frame 33cm x 33cm (13 x 13 inch) in Aussie for $9.97 AUD, wooden frame with 2 x glass panels. I will replace the rear glass panel with a piece of 2mm MDF, fix some thin coloured card and spray glue on, scrape of the writing on the front (Friendly Memories??) glass and spray the wooden spacer frame black and see what happens. Will post a photo when I have finished. A cost effective alternative. Paid $450.00 to get my fathers done!!
Here is the original frame.......all $9.97 worth. More to come...........the finished product. Spider
And the final product!!! Its a bit busy however does the job. Its good to get me medals and memorabilia framed...........all for less than $30.00!!!! I'll have to pick up a few more of those frames.............what a bargin
I think it turned out quite well (pat, pat on the back)......................not bad for about 4 hours work. I'm chuffed!!
I've been doing this sort of thing for years for others as well as my own collection. Here is one that I did for a chum's Dad who was in the Great War. I bought the matte board, acid free and a bevel matte cutter for around CDN$20.00 and the frame was from a frame shop that sells pre-made frames. It was maybe CDN$30 or so with the glass. The second one is one I had done by my framer for my Father-in-Law. There are some neat things in this -- the key was to his room in Cairo on the way to Jessore, India and the 357 Sqn. The other piece in the frame that is a bit unusual is the neck microphone. He gave me his flight bag one day saying that there was nothing in it, and low and behold, down the side and mostly under cover was the end of the mic. I extracted it much to his surprise. This actually measures 36" by 24 " [and wasn't as big a hit with the home office as I thought it would be.] As a consequence, the actual cost has become a state secret. The third photo is one that I had done for a fellow to honour his dad who was with the Ontario Provincial Police. This was done for around CDN$175. Hope this gives you some more ideas. The frame shop people I find are great to work with you, and I think fair priced on the whole. cheers, phil
I have been mounting medals for a few years now and always get inquires about displaying medals and service memorabilia. A big thing is the cost to people and I ran this little project as a viability test. With all medal mounting and displays the important thing is to use acid free products, avoid gluing medals down (hand stitch and d/s tape, I had to use a safe acid free solvent to disassemble one set I had to remount) and if displaying use UV glass to avoid fading and protect the display (the glass in the "Friendly Memories" frame I got is tinted as well). If displaying always best to display copies of the medals.........burglars will take them. Spider
If displaying always best to display copies of the medals.........burglars will take them. That is So Sweet! :agree: I'll be passing that on ~ Thanks!
