My mother in law who died last year saw service in the RAF. She did not see out her service (all of which was in the UK) as she left to have a baby. Would she have been entitled to the War Medal? None of her family know of a medal being issued. Could her short service and early discharge mean her missing out on the issue of a medal?
In addition, if she served for over 3 years + in UK she would also have been entitled to the Defence Medal. WW2 medals had to be applied for - cost-cutting by govt, same reason for not naming them - and many were never requested. These can still be claimed, either by recipient, legal N.O.K or authorised other person (need written consent from N.O.K) by contacting the RAF Medal Office - address is on-line; try MoD website.
