I have decided to redo my father's medal case. Instead of the black back ground it would be more appropriate if I did it in the colour of the uniforms that the R.A.F.V.R. wore during world war 2. Can someone come up with the correct shade of blue so I can send the misses on a material search?
It's difficult to get the shade just right because of the lighting in the pictures and computer screen differences.
David, Surely one of us could get to the Surplus store and get you the real thing. Cut out a rectangle the right size and post it to you.
A medal case would require a softer material (possibly a velvet of the right colour). Surplus material would be difficult to mould into the case.
I bet these chaps could send you a small piece in the right colour for your Dad's case: http://www.replicaters.com/ww2rafuniforms.html From India. Trouble is you truly cannot transmit colour effectively over the standard interweb. (the picture on there with the sergeants stripes looks like the backgrounds about the right shade to me, but may look completely wrong on others pooters?)
VP's right about the first picture - however, just like in army jackets, there were slight differences in RAF colours depending upon where they were produced. I still think uniform material would be difficult to use in a medal case. I use coin cases (vitually the same as medal cases in their linings) for my zippos. The folds in such material would be thicker.
First picture? I meant this one, does that background look about right to others? Lightings nice and neutral all across it giving some hope of similarity from screen to screen..
Thanks Kitty, it needed the woman's touch. I've got some old stamps kicking around here that are Prussian Blue, I can match it with them.
I was Googling "RAF Blue" & found this. Strange names for carpet colours. If anyone wants an RAF themed carpet look here ESD Carpet Tile Liquidation Sale | Ground Zero Electrostatics Aviation Blue Lancaster Gray RAF Blue Cloud
Here's what I came up with. Unfortunatly my camera is not the best in the world, and you can see my reflection in the bottom half of the pictures. I have "relegated" the P.O.W. and Bomber Command medals to a status below the 4 others as they are not official medals.
David Like many others on the site I was was very impressed by the medal case that you designed....a wonderful tribute. My wife's late father was a WW1 veteran and I created the attached frame to honour his memory. The medals were reproductions as the originals were lost during WW2.
The 38th Purely as a matter of interest, my wife and I have visited the museum called "Bet Ha G'Duddim" that is near Netanya, in Israel that commemorates the 38th Batalion.
