No picture Peter? Can you share where the info came from as this may shed clues. Locations, Dates may help to narrow down the unit. That said I'm hoping one of the Tankie chaps on here will know from there records?
Just as an aise... Any "source" on the Matilda I refers to the nickname being inherited from a prewar cartoon character "Matilda the duck".... Well, I've searched and searched...does anyone have picture of said cartoon duck, 'cos I can't find one!!! Or is this just a too-often-repeated urban myth, as David Fletcher says? A project name which stuck?
Well Nick. Infantry Tank Mk 1 because it was the first tank to be put into production that was actually intended to support infantry in the attack, hence slow speed and thick armour (well, since the first war of course). I didn't know there was a Mk 1A, but typically an added A tends to indicate some slight difference, like Besa guns instead of Vickers. Chris
I've never seen an "A" against the Mk1...but "some" were produced with a .50 Vickers MG, it might designate that...?
