How do I find someone to supply a map of Burma , enlarge it , highlight all the places dad travelled through and frame it for me ?
We can point you in the right direction, but that is all... there are some in books but nothing that great... These are links to the best set of Burma maps easily available... http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/ams/burma/ http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/jog/burma/ It's a project I have to do the same thing; also to trace his route across India, but have not been able to spare the time to progress it - the maps are quite large (1/250,000) but there are larger ones held at the British Library (1/100,000 - about nine to each one of the other) which were the ones they used at the time... Nothing I know of is commercially available...
Our Bill Call the Burmese embassy ( MYanmar) in London and ask them nicely for a map of their own country - tell them all the why's they want to know and I am sure you will be inundated with current maps - then get your local photographer to do the needful - and pay the bill and hang it on the wall - job done... Cheers
I recently prepared a 60 page record of my Dad's Unit's actions in Assam and Burma and used 'Google Earth' to find and 'pin' the locations mentioned in the RA Regimental Diaries and other records such as Official War Histories. The result was adequate for the needs. Elswhere I used campaign maps sourced from the Official War History.
Again, check out the map link as they are pretty good... I have used google earth but there's a lot of "green" on it round where they operated...
Here's a 1700x2800 map of Burma less the Arakan (2MB). It might print reasonably well at a large size. It's from the School of Oriental and African Studies.
Well, I have to thank everyone on this thread (but mostly Andrew) for inadvertently solving a three year old puzzle of mine. I looked at Andrew's links above and studied one of the maps. They were larger in scale than the Texas maps and so easier to follow the tributaries of the Shweli River as it wound its way toward the Chinese borders. Using this as a template I went back to the Texas maps and followed the same route. This was the general area where my grandfather was captured, at a place called Lonsa, but I have never been able to locate this village, until now.
That's a great map idler will try that one and farthing Thankyou will try that also. Not had a lot of time on here this week my daughter is getting married this Saturday so been a busy week
You're more than welcome my good comrade and enjoy yours and the family's thoroughly deserved respite and recuperation in the Far East... (don't forget the postcard from the museum, please... )
