Regarding the route.Marseille (Bouches-du- Rhone Department,Provence Alpes Cote D'Azur) to Cambrai (Nord Department,Pas De Calais) with the route split at Tonnerre (Yonne Department,Burgundy). The bottom section Marseille to Lyon is the old Route de Napoleon,(largely bypassed now). Scene of slaughter by USAAF air supremacy and the advancing US forces on withdrawing German forces up the Rhone Valley after the US landings in August 1944. Retreating German forces were constantly harrassed by FFI and Resistance units during their retreat up the Rhone valley. As time went on,it was obvious that the Germans were anxious to get through the Belfort Gap into Germany before the trap closed or be bottled up in France.,
Scene of slaughter by USAAF air supremacy and the advancing US forces on withdrawing German forces up the Rhone Valley after the US landings in August 1944. Apology if wrong, but this is the same route, at the same time, as taken by Das Reich SS Division on their way north, en route to the massacre of Oradour Sur Glane. Maybe it would have been better if the USAAF HAD massacred them? Your teminology suggests that the USAAF were committing some ritual act of barbarism.
