A while ago I came across this site with a petition dedicated to getting Major Winters (Band of Brothers) awarded his Medal of Honour for his achievement for knocking out the four guns at Brecourt Mannor on D-day. He was given the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions but many believe he deserved more as his actions undoubtedly saved many lives on Utah beach. Major Winters is now 89 and hasn't got long. It would be a shame to let this great veteran pass on without the worthy recognition, I personally feel, he should have recieved a long time ago. If you want to, please click the site and sign the petition. Support our Veterans!- Medal of Honor for Major Richard D. Winters Petition
H.R. 796: To authorize and request the President to award the Medal of Honor to Richard D.... (GovTrack.us)
Does anyone know what the gentleman himself thinks of this? Would any unwilling 'star' of a reality based dramatised wartime history also qualify in some way? Zero disrepect to the man himself but this just seems a little... odd.
Sorry , can't agree with this. As you have already said he was awarded a medal for that action. End of story. Many men were recommended for medals and never got them. At least he got one. As Adam says , just because his actions have been shown on a TV show that shouldn't change history.
I cannot also agree with this. I beleive that Winters, a modest man himself, wouldn't like the award either as he says "There were much braver men then me out there". Although I am not disputing Winter's ability in combat and leadership skills he wasn't unique. If we gave hiim a medal like this then we should give one to every platoon, company and battalion commander in WW2.
He got the medal. let it go. THis is purely based on the publicity generated by the TV series and that makes it wrong in my book
As previously stated there were many people who performed above the call of duty and are not fully recognized. I believe that there would be far too heavy an influence by publicity directed towards Easy Company. With all due respect to Major Winters as he was an admirable soldier and leader, an online petition really should not be considered when regarding The Congressional Medal of Honor.
This has happened on many occasions. Many acts of bravery were not fully recognised for whatever reason. I do not think this medal should be awarded now.
Hmmmmm, some interesting points raised here that I never thought of before. I don't think it's wrong or odd to sign the petition but I do now understand what your saying. Thanx for your comments. marcus.
