I am researching his military career 1940 to 1945 as a POW in Germany. I "lost" him following the mass escape of 26 officers from the OFLAG Vb in September 1941 I have spoken to a German who saw him in this OFLAG after the escape and before transferred to another camp in October 1941 But what happened to Stewart after this and what was his regiment and age in 1941? Stefan.
Hi Stefan The database on uses initials so that threws up 2 x H Stewart who are also Majors UK, British Prisoners of War, 1939-1945 Name: R H Stewart Rank: Major Army Number: 67798 Regiment: Border Regiment POW Number: 2132 Camp Type: Oflag Camp Number: IX-A/H Camp Location: Spangenberg, Hesse Name: C H Stewart Rank: Major Army Number: 93920 Regiment: Seaforth Highlanders POW Number: 720 Camp Type: Oflag Camp Number: VII-B Camp Location: Eichstätt, Bavaria Both of these have very low POW numbers which leads me to believe they were taken captive very early on in the war. If you can furnish more details then perhaps his story can be expanded TD
We can rule out Major R H Stewart, Border Regiment. He was Major Richard Henry Stewart M.C. (1916 - 1993) OC Support Company, !st Border Regiment at Arnhem. Wounded and captured there. His MC was for Palestine in 1939. 1st British Airborne Division officers -- S Page 3989 | Supplement 36673, 25 August 1944 | Lond... Page 529 | Supplement 41292, 21 January 1958 | Lond...
93920 C.H. Stewart was captured 1940. and is listed as 2nd Lt. then listed as A/Lt. then listed as Major. In 1945 casualty list he is listed as W/Lt. now not in German Hands
This is from the wiki pages showing a poss timeline from Vb to VIIb: Oflag Vb: First British pows arrived May 1940, SBO Major-Gen V. Fortune (51st Highland Div). In October 1941 British Officers moved to Oflag VIb & camp then used as transit camp for Russian pow's. Possibly caused by the large no of escape attempts and that it was 68 miles from the Swiss border. Oflag VIb: In Sept 1942 British pow's transferred to other camps & replaced with Polish officers. This was soon after the "Warburg Wire Job". Oflag VIIb: In Sept 1942 British Officers (not stated how many) transferred from Oflag VIb.

Hi TD, unfortunately not. I believe he was captured in 1940 close to the border to Belgium. In Biberach he was involved with the escape tunnel, and in October 41 transferred to Warburg.
The highest rank I can find for a Dunkley POW is Name: I F Dunkley Rank: Lieutenant Army Number: 113465 Regiment: East Yorkshire Regiment POW Number: 1071 Camp Type: Oflag Camp Number: IX-A/Z Camp Location: Rotenburg an der Fulda, Hesse This search is wide covering names such as Dingley, most in the Army section are NCO's except the man above TD
TD, Bingo, that's him. I found a reference to Rotenburg where some of the other Biberach officers ended up before US Forces liberated them. Stefan.
