    Hi,

I'm doing research on my great-uncle who was killed June 7 1944. It's difficult as I can't afford the main genealogy websites and so my access to information is restricted. He was with the RASC from 1932 I believe however I'm not sure so any help is appreciated. I've also attached his entry into the Army Book 358 and would appreciate if someone could decipher that for me?

    Kind regards,

    Joel

The mods try to discourage duplicate posts if possible as some members reply to one thread and some to the other, which causes confusion. It is best to just to stick to one thread really and all the useful information you receive will be all in the same place:).

Hi I've merged threads and left this under Searching for Someone & Military Genealogy which is for more general queries.
This thread can always be moved later to RASC should you prefer that.

    Good luck

It seems you dont wish to spend money doing your research - however in order to start off on the right road and to follow the official history of your great uncle I would suggest you do him the honour of obtaining his militry records - the link is - Request records of deceased service personnel - once you have these they will be the skeleton that everything else hangs on, and you will not waste time and money following false routes - which has happened on many threads here

Hi, thank you very much for that. It's not that I don't wish to spend money doing research, it's that I can't afford it. I'm only 15 and therefore don't have ample money to spend, I would if I could.

    Thanks again,

    Joel

Ok - well if its you in your avatar - stop smoking  - looks very much like John Lennon to me, but I need to visit specsavers or some other opthalmic business

Perhaps another relative can somehow help you out with that - to be honest his service records are the crux of your quest, they will lead you in the right direction, and are worth their weight in .................... [any precious metal]

The genealogy web site(s) - I am a member of Ancestry hence the details of his family tree - can only provide you with details that are publically available - his service records are not

Yep it is John Lennon aha, never smoked and don't plan to! And alright, my other relatives aren't particularly interested in him and they're not particularly helpful. I'll try and get his service record.

    Thanks again,

    Joel

    Hi Joel

    Enoch Hugh Person

Joined Territorial Army Royal Artillery (804299) until 1932.

Left RA 1932 and joined RASC (S8018299)

Discharged RASC 1940 to take a commission

Trained at the RASC Officer Producing Centre 1940. Passed out as 1st Lieutenant, 13 July 1940 (140364).

KIA 07/06/1944 in NWE whilst serving with RASC, Buried Hermanville War Cemetery, France.

Says Major but nothing on London Gazette about his promotions so probably an acting rank.

    Hope this helps

I have been reading this Is there any way to find pictures of specific soldiers/more information about someone? : WorldWar2 which I believe is you.

He was not in any Battalion he was in the RASC - Royal Army Service Corps - Wikipedia

All the details you have from those conversations will be the same as we can provide here. One route may be to try and contact his close relatives and find out if they have any details or memorabilia, cap badges etc etc - there is research such as this you can do for free

    TD

There is also background you can do by searching for example - RASC D-Day it results in some info that might help you understand what was happening
BBC - WW2 People's War - RASC Service, Juno Beach (D-Day) and Life in Wartime Birmingham
BBC - WW2 People's War - LIFE IN THE ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORPS, PREPARATIONS FOR D-DAY, AND AFTERWARDS
D Day to VE Day with the R.A.S.C.

    etc etc - get searching

Oh wow, that's really interesting had no idea about him being in the TARA, where did you find this information if you don't mind me asking?

Also yeah, believe he was a Temporary Major acting as a LT at the time of his death.

    Really appreciate your help,

    Joel

    Hi,

Yes that is me, wasn't trying to do research into his background at that point only asking the question. And yes I know he was with the RASC, didn't know they didn't have battalions, I'll try and do some more research into the actual Corps themselves.

Thank you as well for those resources, appreciate it :)
