MAJOR CHANGE TO ICRC POW RECORD PROVISION

Some older members may recall that around 2011 in the lead up to the centenary of the outbreak of WW1 in 2014 that the Swiss Red Cross suspended the provision of both WW1 & WW2 POW records while a project to digitise both sets of records was commenced. The intention was to create a searchable internet database for both sets of records.

ICRC completed the digitisation of WW1 POW records by August 2014 and they are now available online. They abandoned the WW2 digitisation project in 2015. Since then WW2 POW record applications have been restricted to single day (usually morning only) quarterly application windows.

According to the below blog it would appear that ICRC are to once again try to digitise their WW2 POW records.

From paper files to digital access: the digital transformation of the ICRC Archives - Cross-Files | ICRC Archives, audiovisual and library

Consequently while the digitisation project is ongoing - hoped to be completed by late 2027 - the quarterly application window will be replaced by a single annual application “day” - commencing 25th January 2027.

Well that's a date set as a target for me then Steve.

Thanks for posting the latest information up; very much appreciated.

Kind regards, and January 2027, always,
