    I've read varying accounts of this man and wondered whether anybody might have more information.

    He commanded 82nd (West Africa) Division until 12/1/45 at which time he was replaced by Hugh Stockwell (later of Suez fame) at short notice owing to 'illness'. This is described variously as 'an infected foot', 'exhaustion' and 'erratic behaviour'. The most hair-raising version is below:

    I was initially put in mind of Auchinleck's relief of General Sir Alan Cunningham, who it seems had a mental breakdown and was hospitalised (though the whole episode was hushed up and the two men themselves never spoke in such terms), but if the account above is accurate this is a step beyond that.
