    drgmarshall,

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I hope that you find the information that you are seeking.

Getting hold of a copy of the Regimental War Diaries will show where units operated if you have all the relevent details to hand.

If non of the members have them already, there are members that will obtain and photocopy them for you for a small charge.

    Regards
    Tom

Sorry you did not see the sign, my Oldman and 6 Armoured headed for Klagenfurt area, I beleive their billets were near the race course/track.
from there it was demob and his Engineer Squadron broken up and disbanded.

I have a race card for the point to point organised by the 6th armoured at the racecourse at the end of hostilities -my late dad kept it all these years

    Welcome aboard

    I see you say ;

I have a race card for the point to point organised by the 6th armoured at the racecourse at the end of hostilities -my late dad kept it all these years

"I was in Austria at the same time as yourself whilst in the 4TH QOH.
The Squadron organised a Gymkhana/Race Meeting and Popski was there.
He was pointed out to me and feeling like a schoolboy autograph collector I asked him to sign my race-card. He obliged and then we shook hands.
The race card with its autograph has dissapeared over the years but the memory lingers on."

    Snap ?

I'll post a pic of the race sheet later. Just had interesting purchase on ebay - series of letters written home between 1943 and 1945 by a member of 6th armoured div O.F.P. - will post more details as and when I get them - looks like an interesting lot.

You will note that the secretary of the race course was SIR W Carmichael of the 16/5th Lancers - who had batman who was from Public School and he woke the Capt every day at 6.am. - without a clock - and the Capt. wondered how he did this - one day as we were all chatting - the Batman said "it's easy Sir, as before I fall asleep I say out loud - "I have to be awake at 5;30a.m.- three times ........!

Forever afterwards- According to the Capt.- HE was awake at 5:30 a.m. and the Batman snoozed on.....

    Cheers

A thank-you also from me for letting us see the racecard.

    5/7/1945 Five SS ORs arrested.
    6/7/1945 Four SS ORs arrested.
7/7/ 1945 Three SS ORs arrested.
8/7/ 1945 Regt moved to area GRAFENSTEIN coming under command 26th Armd Bde in the 6th Armd Div. A and C Sqns were now re-equipped with Staghound ACs and the Recce Tp with Greyhound ACs. B Sqn was re-equipped with five Tps of Shermans, each Tp having 2 with 76mm guns and one 17pdr.

I remember going to such a race meeting at Spittal, put on by the 4th QOH, and as I couldn’t remember the actual date, wondered for one wild moment if the race card was for the same meeting.

I then went back to the Regimental Diaries for the 7th of July (see above) and see we were otherwise engaged :)

Page 36 of my Album also confirms the race meeting was at Spittal.

I'll copy the rest of the card over the weekend - its about ten pages. My Dad was C squadron DY - his tank was named Curbar after a Derbyshire village. I have a pic of him and mates on a staghound.
