I was stationed at Lumsden Barracks from March 1955 until october 1956 as a clerk in the RAMC Section HQ Cyrenaica District. I cannot find the area in Google Maps.... perhaps it has been obliterated by the recently departed ruler.

Anybody know what happened to the barracks? I can remember BMH Benghazi ... went there a couple of times and D`Aosta barracks. Did a tour of Barce and Derna with a mobile show (playing trumpet) while out there, came top on a drill course (which did not please the RSM who took the course) so had to take second place. My officer in the HQ was Major P.L.G.Cole and the OC at BMH Benghazi was a Col. Orr. Anybody remember anything? Any information would be appreciated.

    Thanks,Kynaston.

I know Lumsden Baracks. I contributed to a thread where I was trying to discover both the huge "D'Aosta" which I am sure was North on the Coastal Road out of Benghazi and the Lumsden one in town.

I am pretty certain about the position of Lumsden but unsure about D'Aosta.

Anyway in the first instance I suggest looking at the Thread and seeing if it rings a few bells.

PS the modern maps do not help - the place is 10times as big and all the Salt marshes seem to have been filled in. You can still get your bearings from the old Cathedral (which is now a museum, I beleive).
