Chaps, I'm trying to trace what happened to an officer noted in the 2nd South Lancs War Diary, around the time of September 1944, when they were fighting as part of 7th Indian Division in Burma. He appears to have been placed under 'Close Arrest', as noted in the field Return of Officers section. His Court Martial date was set but there is no mention of him joining the battalion and no mention of what he did prior to be placed under arrest, nor is there any mention of the outcome of his trial. He is t. H. A Clarke, 177752. I'm assuming it must have been pretty bad because even through all the difficult fighting, he doesn't seem to have been released from close arrest.
He survived the war - He's not listed on CWGC. Does he get a mention in the 1945 diary or listed on the 1945 Officer Field Returns?
He's not mentioned anywhere else, that's the annoying thing. There is a lot of officers being prosecuted but we've no idea what for!
Three months later he has a MID gazetted (LG 5th April 1945) In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Burma and on the Eastern Frontier of India
Bit odd that he should be made Capt after a GCM...The National Archives WO 71 file reference names those with a GCM. I can't find him amongst the list, Are the other names you mentioned of officers in the same unit?
He was a war substansive Captain (temp) when the MID was recommeded. The LG list are other South Lancs Officers, NCO and OR also awarded a MID.
