Hello, I'm doing the last touches to my WW1 Somme drawing for the village at Mericourt, could you please advise me as to what a Lt Col's cuff markings would have looked like? Many many thanks Soren
I would also appreciate so pointers as to what a 1916 officer would have worn when going 'over the top' in 1916
Google is my friend. File:British officer rank ww1.png - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Then again he may have had 'funk pips' on his shoulder straps instead of on the cuff .
From Osprey MAA 182 British Battle Insignia(I) 1914-18 Mike Chappell. A Capt of 2/5th Glosters 61st Div, 1916. If you draw him going over top make sure he wearing his battle-bowler. Are there no bookshops in Ieper selling reference books on British Army uniforms? PS In earlier post i forgot to say Guards officers never wore cuff rank insignia , it was always on shoulder straps.
I would also appreciate so pointers as to what a 1916 officer would have worn when going 'over the top' in 1916 In what capacity? If in no specialist role, you'd basically be looking at skeleton order equipment for the first wave and (light) marching order for the following waves. In all possibility, he may also be wearing a shoulder ranked OR's jacket - especially so later in 1916 (though OSD is still more likely at this stage) - along with other OR accoutrements. He may also be carrying a rifle - again dependant on exact role and date. If you're wanting a 'stereotype' though, then stick to OSD (cuff or shoulder rank - not that important (cuff rank actually died out a little mid-war for ranks under Major, being resurrected again in mid to late 1917), tin lid, light Sam Brown rig (no sword...leave that behind for toasting bread- 2 straps, pistol holster, ammunition carrier, compass case, water bottle, haversack/map case), gas mask bag (2?) - PH or/and SBR (dependant on date in 1916... if carrying SBR , then PH was also carried for back-up in 1916)...oh, and don't forget his stick!!!
Another basic guide pic here. AS Dave says, notice the stick. Officer of the East Surreys, Service Dress 1916 with trench cap. The First World War 1914-1918 - The East Surrey Regiment
