The Sherman was in HQ of the 8th Armoured. Hence the 993.

(Whilst the trucks there beside and behind it are, I think, said to have been part of the SRY)

Re. The load serial number for LST-21 - there may be tables that match LST numbers to load serial numbers? I find even if I am familiar with them previously I have to check and recheck to be sure as it's incredibly easy to get things mixed up. Another part of the vast complexity and how baffling everything is / can become to figure out without such references.

Ref : GOLD Area LTIN-Hull Number matches for US LST

    Has - for instance - "2917 - US LST 21 - towing Rhinos"

Thanks. I just noticed that there is a number 2917 painted on the tank above the fender.

That's the LTIN (Landing Table Index Number) which links the 'load' to the LST.

Note: planners worked on the basis of 'loads' - tanks, other vehicles, people, etc, etc - that could be carried by the various types of craft available and then allocated each 'load' to a specific craft when it was known what craft were available. Makes a lot of sense if you think about it.
