If you're a very patient and very organized person, then War in the Pacific is THE land/Sea wargame !

I think that you should get brothers in arms for land and I haven't played it yet but I think Battlestations Midway is tactical

Steel Panthers is graphically several years out of date but is a good turn based brigade level game. It can be downloaded for free; you pay for further scenarios but there are plenty with the game.

Steel Panthers - World at War ! - Matrix Games

It's produced by Matrix Games, who make a number of strategy games. I've not played the new version of The Operational Art of War but the original was excellent.

Matrix Games - the Glory in Gaming is Back!

i've not played Hearts of Iron, as recommended by Laufer, but from what I've heard, it's the best game if you want a detailed game where you're operating at the Churchill/Roosevelt/Hitler level of grand strategy.

Hearts of Iron is definitely worth Checking out for a strategic wargame.
