I wouldn't be surprised if both stories aren't true.

I'm reminded of a group of British and Canadian officers at Stalag Luft 1. Following liberation, with no sign of being let go, these fellows took off. On their way towards Wismar (they had heard the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion was there) they came across a Mercedes staff car that had been abandoned by a German officer of some standing. They took the car, loaded it up with booze and cigarettes, and proceeded to nearly get killed when they stopped at a Soviet roadblock. Here they ran into "Mongolians" (actually soldiers from the Soviet Central Asian republics) who were convinced that staff car + booze and cigs + and RAF and RCAF blue = German. Following some quick negotiations, our heroes were allowed to go on their way. Further adventures would follow before they met up with 1 Can Para.

    Regards,

    Dave
