Hi all. Sorry i am looking for assistance again.....I have recently found out that my Great Uncle served in the burma campaign. Nobody knows what regiment he served with whether it was Army, Royal Marines or RAF. He survived the war and died in 1996. All i have to go off is his name Arthur Harry Whittaker and he was born 14th March 1922 Manchester. I know i can order his service records on his Name and DOB alone but i would like to find out whom he served with first. I wondering if anybody knows where to search to find that info out. I have tried google etc but nothing. As soon as i find which service he served with i can order up his records. Thanks all in advance

Did he survive the war? - was he a prisoner during the war, any photos of him?? - small details could enable the forum to answer your question

Yes he survived the war. He died in 1996. I have no documentation at all. A cousin in the family had all his medals and information regarding his service. He gave it all away. Nobody knows who to and has since died.

Not sure what you mean ? Arthur Harry Whittaker was he christened `Harry` ? `Harry` is just another form of `Henry` as far as I`m aware?
Are you saying `Arthur Henry Whittaker` in the attestation couldnt be your relative or you simply do not know ? A name isnt going to be enough I dont think :(

Just an update. I have spoke with Records office and they cant help. They said i would just have to apply for Army service records for £30. If he wasnt in the army the search would tell me which service he was with. So at worse it could cost £60. They have no facility to search until the paid search has been completed.

Thanks for all your help i will keep you updated.

I was under the impression that if the MOD found no records then the money was refunded/cheque was not cashed

    added:
    Administration fee
Subject to the payment of an administration fee of £30 per record and provision of a death certificate (except where death was in service), certain information can be provided from the records of service of service personnel on request under the publication scheme.
The administration fee of £30 will be waived for requests from those who were the spouse or civil partner of the subject at the time of death (or parent if there was no spouse or civil partner).
The information that is held on individuals varies depending on which service they served with, when they served and the length of their service. In a small number of cases little or no information may be held. Applicants should be aware that the £30 administration fee is non-refundable whatever the outcome of the search.

I assume they will check all services - except Guards Regiments who keep their own records

The fee will only be waived for spouse or civil partner at the time. However they will tell me which service he was in
