Hope this is the right to post in this thread. As suggests I'm looking for more details of 42nd Street battle since I've learnt of this battle it interests me and have since found out that my grandfather may have been in this battle. I've read 42nd street book and what I can find online. It's like this battle didn't happen there no a lot out there on this topic. Any help much appreciated thanks in advance
Hi Kiwigal, Have you a copy of his service records to confirm that he was in Crete? Once you know his unit you should go through the official histories and war diaries to get a bigger picture of his involvement, if he was involved. EDIT- looking at your posts you mention that he was 7th Engineer Brigade? Should that read 7th Field Company? There is some information about NZ engineers at Crete here- CHAPTER 5 — The Campaign in Crete | NZETC Scott
I have it mentioned that some 7th engineer were there on 42nd street I've got some of grandfather records but apparently they don't have his full records apparently there about six months missing they don't have his medical records of what sent him back home we know he was shot and came home with six german bullets left in him we know for sure he was in Crete and Egypt the details we were given are very light.
There is quite a bit mentioned about 7th Field Company at 42nd Street in that account from P.153 onwards. I gather records may well have been lost on Crete if your grandad’s records aren’t complete. If you are researching him long term it’s worth collecting and going through memoirs of soldiers who served there. You often find snippets of information.
Hi Kiwigal I've recently returned from Crete where I had to privilege to pay my respects at the memorial at 42nd Street. I would be interested in connecting with you to learn more about your grandfather and to pay homage to him through a page I've created
