Hi there I'm hoping someone can help me better understand my grandads naval records.

I'm struggling to understand what A.& S. Group No 38 in the Royal marines means as I cannot find info on this.

I am also struggling to find out what Oval P.F.F means under examinations and qualifications on this record.

His is service number is Po/X103750 which I know means he was in the Portsmouth division. I also know he served on the Frobisher and the Cleopatra.

Any help understanding any of these would greatly appreciated!

    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum.

A&S means Age & Service Group.

A matrix was created to support an orderly post war demobilisation process for Class A personnel using a man’s year of birth and month of enlistment/conscription (starting Sept 1939).

All serving men were aware of their A&S group from late 1944 onwards.

There were 2 classes of demobilisation. The vast majority of personnel were in Class A and were demobilised in strict A&S group order but a smaller group of men with skills deemed useful to the post war reconstruction of civil life could apply for immediate demobilisation under Class B regulations. That group included tradesmen, teachers, Police Officers etc.

I can’t help re your other query
