This is a book I would love to read....and I've got a copy courtesy of eBay some time ago....but the paper is so browned and brittle that I'm almost frightened to open it. Lots of inserts in a back folder pocket as well.

World of Rare Books appear to have a copy priced at about £50

Guess I've missed it, but which Elstob book are you referring to? Most of his titles come up regularly on eBay.

Chris - The Arnhem Library is about 6 kilometers from where I live (a 20 minute bicycle ride) ... but alas locked down for well known reasons ... so close by and yet so far away.

When all this is over I will go over there and look for the book.

Chris - there are numerous articles covering this period/area in the magazine After the Battle. If you go to its website you can see the content of the magazines over the years and download an index for greater granularity.

Well, if you really want to, sure, but I can imagine that it's about Veritable and I know the book series so I can kind of "picture it", if not read it.

Thank you Stolpi, I will save and add that to my files.

In actual fact my interest here is more in gaining a better understanding about the operations on a wider scale but also in more detail. Partly for simple understanding, but also I haven't made up my mind if I will write sections or short chapters on for instance "Archers in Operation Veritable" in which case I would want to be able to briefly narrate what was happening on a wider scale and sprinkle in the details of what the Archer troops were up to. I feel like I do have some sense of the overall for Veritable (since I have read Cinderalla Army, and the divisional history of the 51st, etc, not to mention your threads) but less so for other operations such as Plunder or actions in April.

Hello Chris, this may be one of interest for you, have you seen it before? Given it was published/printed in Canada it may be less expensive for you there than the price over in Europe.

It's a decent translation of the Saft book. As to content accuracy it would be very worth your while having a chat with JDKR (John) before taking a punt on it maybe (if you don't already have it of course!) as the German language original (also pictured below) is on John's pdf, book list that's posted earlier in this thread.

For me, the "other side of the hill" aspect of it is worth the investment.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

    Hi Jim,

That is intriguing! It would certainly help to give a fuller perspective of things. I guess I will have to keep an eye out... There can't have been many copies printed, judging by the price on abebooks and the recent publishing date (2015). Edit: judging by the publisher's website, the price was probably quite high to begin with!

The German version also is quite expensive on Abebooks.

This book was my gateway drug into military history. But you should read it with due caution as Saft performed much aristic license when interpreting sources. Probably you may ask "Hoover" here at the forum: As far as I remember he once obtained several of Safts original sources...
