Until you can pin down Family Tree details, we're not likely to be able to help with any wartime service.
You may need a specialised Family Tree resource such as Rootschat first before being able to identify the correct names for anyone here to research.

"Facts" you give keep changing, so it's impossible to help without you being sure of who he actually is.
Once you have his name, you will be able to apply for his Service records on the link given previously.
We can then help with acronyms, unit, War Diaries etc.

It's obviously difficult for you with people and fickle memories but we can only work with what we are given and you'll appreciate that it isn't a lot so far.

Are there no family photographs of him in uniform? That may give uniform and cap badge experts here something to work with.
At the moment we might do better identifying the dog.
