Larry Slattery's legacy was supporting youth choirs, bands and the like.

    Hi Frances,
My name is Dennis Dare, son of Charles Frederick Dare, who was a POW with your father during WW2. Your Dad did a very impressive painting of my father which holds centre stage in my living room. It was apparently painted on the calico wrapping the POWs received their Red Cross in and is an oil. I also have a sketch of the painting which is where I got your dads name. While I’m at it, there is mention of Ron Mogg who’s poems are written and signed in his POW dairies. I would love to forward a photo to you. I’m quite excited about this and would love to hear from you
    Kind regards
    Dennis

Hi Frances, thank you for your response. My daughter sorted me out attaching the photos. The second photo is a signed print your dad did which I guess he did the original painting from. The third photo was written on the back of the print, hopefully you can read. Les Booth was my dads second pilot on a Wellington Bomber when they were shot down in 1941 over Frankfurt. The fourth photo is an extract from his POW log, signed by your dad.
Frances, I probably don’t have a lot of question, I just wish to share with you and others the info I have. My father was the POW dentist and sorted out many a tooth ache. I have plenty of poems by Ron Mogg and would love to source the book written in his memory.
Your father was a very talented artist, you must be immensely proud.

I'm wondering how to get in touch with Frances ww2talk.com Member tag Feason. It has been 6 years since this thread petered out.
My father was in several camps with John Murrell and our family has a portrait on hardboard of our father, Ivan Quinn,
    signed John Murrell '44.
I know they were both in Stalag Luft III and Stalag 357 at the same time. (Perhaps also Stalag 6 Heydekrug?)
The portrait is an important of our dad's kriegie stories. He carried it out of camp, and all the way back to Canada in April 1945.

My sister told me about this site ages ago, but as she is the family historian I left her to it, my father was John Murrell and he was a very lovely man , if a bit weird.he was a good artist and clearly was very happy while he was drawing and painting.A gift he passed down to several family members. (I think he gave me his weirdness) My eldest son found this site and got quite emotional about the fact that some of his drawings etc from his POW days were still in existence. Our family are incredibly proud of my father and the sad thing is, that with the world in the state it is at the moment. I suspect he would have said 'sometimes I wonder why we all bothered'
He did a lovely portrait of my younger brother (RIP) when he was small and when I asked him if he would paint me, he said no, because I rarely closed my mouth...

    Hi,

I’ve just come across this topic today. Frances has not signed in to the forum for a long while. I’ll send her a message via the site messaging system to alert her to your post. I can’t guarantee she will respond.

    Hi again,
I would be very happy to send a copy of my father's portrait to Frances (Eason?) and/or Janet Gardner. It is enjoyed and beloved by our family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

I was saying in an earlier post on this link that he carried the painting back to Canada with him, but having just reviewed the notation on the back of the painting, I think it might have reached Canada by post, after all the Kriegies were liberated.

If either of you is able to send me an email, that would be great.

    Cheers,
    Sally Quinn (daughter of Ivan Quinn POW #175 - Aug.28, 1941 to Apr.16, 1944)
    Stalag 3E Kirchhain / Stalag 6 Heydekrug / Stalag Luft 3 Sagan / Stalag 357 Fallingbostel

He was shotdown on August 28th, 1941, a fortnight before John Murrell. The kriegies became a group of lifelong friends and acquaintances, as ex-POW air men.
We have a postal strike on in Canada, which will hopefully be coming to an end this week. Meanwhile the easiest way to get in touch with me is: s_quinn@dccnet.com
I live near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
