hi i am new to the issue of military records etc, so i am going to start with a simple one..i collect ww2 items engraved with names and numbers on..i found 2 lighters both engraved with a name and number on, one is from the usa the other is british .to start with i would like to find the units these pilots were in.. RAF wings on ronson lighter .. A.H WARING. 1118182. has anybody come across this name in unit records ?. next again ronson lighter USA wings on, JOHN.J.POWERS 0-842890. I know it a long shot but is worth a try. a sad foot note i found a watch with a name on, i left a note on a 8th air force forum site, got a reply, the pilot flew B17s, and was here for just 3 months and was KIA along with his crew , down in the sea after a raid on germany..its easy to find records on pilots who were KIA, but harder to find info on the guys who made it home

    Hi,

From the National Archives AIR 78 files

    Arthur Hugh Waring 1118182.

His number falls in the Service No. batch 965000 to 1149977 which indicates he enlisted at Padgate in 1939.
Can't see any entries in London Gazette for Arthur Hugh Waring or A.H Waring, suggesting he was never commissioned as an officer.
Have you any other info on him? what makes you believe he was a pilot?

    Regards

    Pete.
