Hello users, Does any one know of a source for finding out the exact locations of camps and forward bases in Egypt, Libya, Palestine, Syria and Italy? Any help is much appreciated as I am trying to make a relatively precise time line of events. Regards, Will
I personally believe that the best way to get help is to list all of the places you are interested in, possibly with a copy of the source of your info (just in case you have misunderstood or mis-transcribed something). Type it out in sequence including the ones you have already worked out and leave it to the helpful types on here after that. Identifying the unit you are interested in could also help. Basically don't struggle to do 100% of it yourself when you can crowd-source assistance on this forum. Many of us do it quite often when baffled by provided info. cheers & good luck Dave
Hi Dave, Thanks for responding. It's always nice to have help but it's also nice to know where people find out all these things! Im basically looking for the exact location of the following: -Beni Yusef Camp(Egypt) -The Camp at Delta (Egypt) -American Camp (Kilo 15) (libya/Egypt) -199 Transit Camp (Italy) Could someone also point me in a direction to find the outlines of defensive positions in North Africa at different stages of the war? Thanks in advance, Will -
To start the ball rolling: Beni Yusef Camp(Egypt) Google link to a site - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Strawson_(British_Army_officer) which says: "On returning to Egypt, the regiment was stationed at Beni Yusef camp in Cairo in the region of Mena, beside the pyramids." Not quite exact but quite close I think TD
there a few files at Kew for 199 Transit camp. WO 169/13589 199 Transit Camp1943 May- Dec. WO 170/3696 199 Transit Camp1944 Jan.- Dec. WO 170/7280 Transit Centres and Camps: 199 Camp1945 Jan.- Dec. WO 170/9065 Transit Camps: 199 Camp1946 Jan.- June -
Beni Yûsef, about 4 to 5 miles south of the pyramids, is on this map (GSGS 4085 Egypt 1:100,00 Sheet 80/60 Cairo) grid square 3101. Richard.
Could someone also point me in a direction to find the outlines of defensive positions in North Africa at different stages of the war? what would you exactly mean with that? 1- El Alamein 2- Gazala 3- Bir Hakim 4- Tobruq 5- El Agheila .....
Hello again gents, Thank you for the great response, some great links. In terms of defensive positions i am looking at the time where 10th corps moved from Palestine/syria to join Monty's 8th army. The unit im looking at filled the lines with 10th corps. Will
One trick is the use of 'Dezoomify' to turn non-downloadable 'interactive' mosaics into a single full-sized image. For instance, this useful 1943 War Office map of Sidi Barrani to Matruh: http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/onlineex/maps/africa/zoomify136541.html Put the URL in here: Dezoomify And you get a 43mb full-sized image to download. This also works for photographs on sites that prevent downloads and only allow you to work with the image by moving around and looking at specific sections. So searching the British Library online collection for GSGS brings these 285 results: See Here: Explore the British Library Search - gsgs Choose which you want and click the title > Select 'View Online" GO (Red Box) > Click Interactive "Zoomable" to the right of the map > Copy the URL of the page that loads to Dezoomify > Wait while that site generates the full image. edit: if you can't get a 'right-click save' from the resulting full image, browsers such as Safari allow you to File > Export as .pdf from webpages.
Thanks for that CF. I remember once stitching together about 50 screen shots to make one map. If only I had known about Dezoomify then!
