Nick - yes - that matches up with mine. Looks like the farm is no longer there and part of that housing estate? Maybe Philip has some modern images of the area?
The farm is still there. It was restored and is now in use as kind of a community center. I live close by it in the new housing estate you mentioned. A memorial for the soldiers of the Wiltshire regiment will be placed next to the farm later on this year. Here links to the farm and on the memorial. All in Dutch, I am afraid, but they contain pictures of the farm in its current state and the design for the memorial. I will try to answer them in my best English. Greetings, Marije Arnhem
Hi Marije and welcome to the forum. The artists impression of the memorial looks quite impressive. With the help of Marije (Many Thanks) It is the 'L' shaped building above the farm complex and below the housing estate. Regards Andy
nice that a memorial is placed, a pitty that from a distance it totally doesn't look like a war memorial at all, always get a little pissed off, that they use this modern shit, instead of something more reconizeable as a war memorial
Marije Welcome to the forum and thank you for the links. If you have any questions on the farm or the surroundings, please ask. I will try to answer them in my best English. Greetings, Marije Arnhem Your English is better than my Dutch. As Andy has said the memorial looks impressive, have they started work on it yet? nice that a memorial is placed, a pitty that from a distance it totally doesn't look like a war memorial at all, always get a little pissed off, that they use this modern shit, instead of something more reconizeable as a war memorial Philip To me it's more important that a memorial has been placed than what it looks like, as long as it attracts attention and it is clear what or whom it is commemorating then it has achieved it's purpose. Mind you I have more than a passing interest in this one. Nick
Marije Welcome to the Forum. I looked at the 2 links and with my limited understanding of Dutch (although I'm an "Engelsman", my Mum came from Delft), is it possible to find out when the memorial is due for completion and dedication. Kind regards - Robert
Great thread, I've only been reading up on this for the past couple of weeks, request from my GF; Arthur Fredrick Sawyer's Great Niece i just popped one of the articles into free translation . com and it's kinda read-able which is nice: Wiltshire Regiment krijgt herdenkingsmonument in Schuytgraaf | Schuytgraaf Online this fall the Wiltshire Regiment gets 65 year Market Guards after the start of operation a recollections monument in the south of Schuytgraaf. To height of the curve in the Marasingel to west of farm De Laar, where now De Buitenplaats have been established, comes a monument as honor at the men that for our freedom fought. Designer Tirza Verrips has gotten form of GEM Schuytgraaf the task round the recollections monument to give. The Wiltshire Regiment has been pulled from the landing in Normandy all fighting direction Arnhem. In the south of Arnhem were with name the 4e and 5e battalion of this regiment concerned by fierce fights. Especially by Farm De Laar is vehement fought. Because by the fights the Rijndijk were blown up, came the country where now Schuytgraaf lies largely under water to stand. Because of this it became perished all after the liberation very with difficulty on to travel by train. During the building activities of Schuytgraaf, two soldiers of the Wiltshire Regiment was secured in 2001 and 2003 yet. There have been missed however yet always eighteen soldiers of this regiment. The fights that in this order through the Wiltshire Regiment have been led have at least so much impact had as the lake known fights of the Blow Arnhem. According to the initiators for the recollections monument drove too more the Wiltshire Regiments the attention to give that they earns.,. The first sketches of designer Tirza Verrips its enthousiastic goods received. The recollections monument will get the form of a 'wave' and are exported in so-called Cortenstaal. The recollections monument becomes about 4.5 meters long, 2.45 meters broad and 1.9 meters high. In the future will come on the archaeological field of Schuytgraaf near station Arnhem-South a large monument as a reference to the Second world War. It is the intention that that spot then can go function as central recollections spot for the wars history of Arnhem. Initiators for the Wiltshire Herdenkingsmonument are among many GEM Schuytgraaf and the municipality Arnhem.
Glosters RGBWLI Regimental Association In April 2010 a monument to the casualties of 4th & 5th Battalion The Wiltshire Regiment is going to be unveiled>>> at the newly built Schuytgraaf housing estate at Arnhem-Netherlands. The wave represents both the long way from Normandy up to Arnhem and the constant Germanattack waves coming from the railway embankment and level crossing to the east. The former De Laar farm, where the monument will be erected, was in the centre of the 1944 WILTS defensive positions, held by B-Coy and some S-Coy troops. The monument was designed by renowned Dutch artist Tirza Verrips, who has done several war monuments. It is made of steel, the base is of natural stone. In the two side panels, the names and army numbers of all 73 casualties are engraved (per battalion): those who were killed in action, went missing, or died of wounds sustained during "the battle for the Island" (the latter even up to months later). The front panel bears the 43rd Wessex Division Wyvern and the WW2 type Wiltshire Regiment badge. With this monument the Wiltshire Regiment casualties from the aftermath of Operation Market-Garden are honoured, and the people of the new housing estate made aware of the historic ground they live on, for which was suffered so dearly. May it become a place of pilgrimage and also a standard feature in Arnhem battlefield tours.
Dear all, Tonight I passed the monument for the first time and I thought it would be nice to post a picture of some work in progress. In this picture you see the farm (and my bike in the background. The monument is still fenced in at the moment, but I'll be posting some more pictures soon. I also expect (hope i.e.) that there will be some sort of ceremony on the 4th of May. Of course I will attend and keep you posted. Greetings, Marije link to picture Twitpic - Share photos on Twitter
