I have been fortunate to be able to chat with a mate about his life living as a civilian in a Japanese occupied country. Some of the stuff he told me was rather humorous & 1 such anecdote is worth telling here & it was not an isolated case. My friend Ric was (along with his sisters) born in Shanghai to an Italian father & Chinese Filipina mother, when things started to get bad in China in the mid '30's, they moved to the Philippines.

Ric's eldest sister married an Italian living in Manila & all was good until Pearl Harbour, after which the sister & hubby were sent to los Banos internment camp for axis aliens.

After Manila was declared an open city, the Japs let them out of the camp.

When Italy surrendered, the Japs put them back in the camp & off course when the Americans liberated the Philippines they were let out again.

The obvious question is "& what did you do in the war"

1 thing I did not know about the Philippine occupation was that all axis aligned civilians had to wear a yellow arm band on their clothing to differentiate them from Mistizos/mistizas.

    Regards
