Hi Does anyone have or knows where i may be able to attain a list of Lancaster sqns based in the Uk, I`m trying to trace my Grandfather of which i knew he was part of a lancaster crew, allegedly pilot of one until he got busted in rank following delaying a takeoff for a mission. or even a diairy of daily missions of each squadron would be a start i guess. All i have at the mo is his name Mr Anthony Alfred Glynn Cheers Dave
Anthony Alfred Glynn 1042532 RAF I couldn't find him in the London Gazette searching by name or number - so not commissioned and didn't receive an MiD etc ********************************************************************************* Someone should be along shortly to provide advice on how to apply for his service records via the MoD in the UK - this is the only way to know anything of importance on a WW2 veteran. You pay your money and wait for the file. Then scan it and place it on this thread so the resident experts can translate all of the jargon, acronyms and codes for you. Sometimes you might get lucky searching by name, but without a SQN number it would be a needle in a haystack - I would guess that there were upwards of a hundred Lancaster Squadrons operating during the war. ********************************************************************************* If you really want a list of SQNs then wiki is your friend - List of Avro Lancaster operators - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - noting that he might have been in a RAF SQN or a RAAF SQN or a RCAF SQN or a RNZAF SQN etc etc
If you know a year and that he was an Officer or Warrant Officer he will be listed in an 'Air Force List'. RAF and other Commonwealth etc. Squadrons not listed by type flown, but by Command and personnel are listed by as at DD/MM/YY which changed by time of publication - casualties and postings. Each year may have several publications and may cover different aspects of the service. One may contain changes in individual occurrences others units and movements. Dave, Wills Awesome thanks so much couldn`t believe how quick the reply was, i can now start to look further into his. I have a form for requesting the service records from MOD, which is a general enquiries form and a copy of Death cert. I know from family chats that he was based at RAF Llandwrog, Caernarvon, north wales for a short time. this may have been after he got reduced in rank, unsure one part which i heard of was that he did serve over in Burma which leads me to think he swapped aircraft or was forced too. i`m told he had a Burma star however when i contacted them they couldn`t find his name on the list. anyways thanks again for the info above will keep you informed of results and if i get records will indeed upload here for analysis. Cheers Guys Dave Glynn

Dave I see the jpg image with my Grandfathers name and service no, can you tell me what that is from? is it of a ORB form or something else. having been in the RAF i know my General enquiries request will take some time to reply, it would be good to know what squadron he was in or where he was based to keep things going until then . Dave G
Dave - rest assured if there was some more info to pass on I would have done so. The image was taken from a list of index cards for all members of the RAF in WW2 from TNA What you see is the sum total of info contained on the cards. Having the service number should make applying for his records a bit easier for you. AIR 78 Air Ministry and Ministry of Defence: Department of the Air Member for Personnel: Index to Airmen and Airwomen Index to airmen and airwomen's service records held in AIR 79. The microfilmed slips contain name and RAF service number only. This index is not 100% complete. The great majority of the original index slips were microfilmed, however there is a small number of random gaps, where a slip had been lost prior to filming
My uncle Flying Office Frederick Stanley Farren was the RAAF Aussie pilot on this aircraft. I presume he had been seconded to No.61 Squadron RAF, as the rest of his crew were RAF personnel. The aircraft left Skellingthorpe at 1750 hrs March 7th 1945 on bombing operations to Harburg. It was reported missing the following day & it was reported that pilots of other aircraft in the vicinity encountered considerable flak & fighter opposition during this operation. Several aircraft were seen to go down in flames over the target. This aircraft was never seen again & some time later the bodies of 2 crew members - my uncle FO Farren & FS William Mcmarth washed ashore, were discovered by American troops & initially buried locally. They were then shifted to a US war cemetery in Holland in error & FO Fred Farren was (ultimately) correctly identifed & re-interred at the Nederwert war cemetery in The Netherlands. The bodies of the remaining 5 crew members were never recovered. FS Mcmarth's grandson in the UK has recently been in touch with me here in Australia & I would be keen to make contact with descendants of these men. They were: FS T.L. Benson FS W.S. Tandy Sgt. J. Sinclair Sgt. A. Lockett Sgt. A. Peckham[/COLOR] I would love to have any other information members of ww2talk may have about this crew. Meg Stirling, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

If not, I can send you one. Cheers Geoff
Thanks Geoff, have started a new thread. We do have a photo of his grave, but thanks so much for your kind offer. Meg

Hi Dave, I have a funny feeling we have something in common. My fathers name was Anthony Alfred Glynn and he served in the RAF (as did I). He was also at Llandwrog and had the Burma Star. He was also in India (Secundrabad - I think that is how you spell it) and at RAF Ternhill. In later years he lived in Conwy. I also remember he gave his old flying helmet to his grandson called David. These days I live in Tasmania, Australia, but would love to catch up and assist you in any way I can. Regards Howard Howard Glynn
Dave Glynn ,I am enjoying this thread. fingers crossed we get updates Elsie H Glynn, so relatives united , that is so amazing . Elsie
Hi all, I am looking for further information regarding the RAF Station RAF Llandwrog in north wales from 1941- 45 in particular it was used as a training camp for Air Gunnery / Navigation. using i believe Avro Ansons and Lysanders. this is part of my continued search on my Grandad (Anthony Alfred Glynn 10425320 who trained there. I know there was a No 9 air Gunnery school based there and was wondering if anyone had info regarding training flight sorties / logs which may mention his name. Does a training attendance list exist publically to view, a positive from all this is that I have recently been got in touch with my Uncle who i have not seen nor spoke to in over 30 yrs and is his father i'm gathering information about a somewhat cloudy topic of events now as i now know he may not have been a Lancaster crew member but intriging to start down a new route. again thanks to those who gave me some good staring points. more to follow hopefully Dave G
Hi Howard, I am chasing up our contact if you wish to regain contact with me please reply to this, and we can arrange a phone call sometime. kind regards Dave
